The Core 4 Committee at PA Distance Learning Charter School is made up of teachers, staff members, and high school students who lead by example. Members also encourage their peers to exhibit characteristics that emulate four positive habits: organization, self-advocacy, working independently, and attendance.

Students are instructed and rewarded for completing tasks and showcasing these positive behaviors. They are also entrusted to organize reward events for others who complete the Core 4-themed lessons and activities during their homerooms each month.

“I like being a part of the committee because I can give teachers and staff my point-of-view to help my classmates succeed,” one member explained.

This year, teacher representatives on the committee include High School Principal Mr. Mort, Social Studies teachers Ms. Petraglia and Mr. Mysels, English teachers Mr. Glaser and Mrs. Donofrio, Special Education teacher Mrs. Blose, Director of Special Education Ms. Faith, and Behavioral Specialist, Ms. Bigos

“I have to say that I am impressed with the work of all those involved. To have students engaged in the decision-making process and helping to determine what is important from their standpoint will continue to be a focus for the high school,” Mr. Mort stated.

Similar to the PA Distance Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) Rewards program for grades K-8, the high school staff’s reward system for participation in positive behavior is developed within the Core 4 Committee.

High School Core 4 Student Leadership

Recently, the committee has combined with student leadership to be called "High School Core 4 Student Leadership.” Each month, the group trades off between completing a service learning project or a Core 4 lesson. Some projects have included making holiday cards, the Book Buddies program, and sharing test strategies.

“We have a lot of fun while also being productive,” another member said. “I like being involved in something important that impacts students. We have a great time socializing when we get together to brainstorm ideas.”

Above all else, the Core 4 Committee is focused on letting PA Distance students shine, grow and develop the skills they need to become leaders of our community once they graduate.

“The student leadership that is shown in these meetings is truly amazing, and I appreciate every member for being a great leader,” Ms. Faith said.
