PA Distance Class of 2016 graduate and valedictorian Ira Reed has been busy earning a degree in Computer Forensics from Strayer University since graduation. For the last few years, he has been learning the ins and outs of investigating computer-based crime. After finishing his degree in March of 2023, he plans to pursue a career battling human trafficking using the skills to identify and prevent the use of technology to exploit individuals across the world.
“I want to make a difference and help end human trafficking,” he explained. “I already have an opportunity lined up for when I graduate from Strayer.”
During his six years as a student at PA Distance, Ira got the opportunity to take a variety of courses, including elective classes that interested him. One of those led to his career path today.
“I liked biology, history, the sports and marketing elective class, and music, to name a few,” Ira explained. “I personally loved learning about the Constitution of the United States. I also remember the virtual physical education classes very well.”
“I took a Criminology elective course, which initially got me interested in the field, and it was fascinating,” he noted. “I learned about the criminal justice system and the psychology behind people who commit crimes.”
Looking back on his time at PA Distance, Ira remembers his relationship with teachers and the events he attended.
“My time at PA Distance was great. It took some time to get used to doing everything on the computer. The teachers were really nice,” Ira said. “I always got into conversations with them about my interests outside of class, too.”
“I am still in touch with some teachers and staff members,” he added.
“I also remember going to the Open House events at the school’s office for a few years when I was enrolled,” he explained. “They were a lot of fun, and it was always great to see everyone. I still have some items that I won and made from activities they had set up and crafts they showed us how to do.”
As the Class of 2016 valedictorian, Ira spent time with teachers, classmates, and family members at the graduation ceremony and also had the opportunity to give a speech.
“The graduation ceremony, held in State College, PA, was very well done,” he said. “I still remember the speech I gave after being announced as the valedictorian. I dedicated it to a friend of mine that had passed away right before the ceremony. It was definitely something I won't forget for the rest of my life.”
The misconceptions surrounding life at a cyber school have been around for years, including when Ira was in school. He explains that, although it’s all online, he never missed out on the social interaction he needed.
“A lot of people think students are losing social interaction, but that’s not true,” Ira said. “I never had to worry about that. I had constant communication.”
“I had an overall quality experience at PA Distance. The teachers always made me feel comfortable and encouraged me to ask questions. They always told me that every question is a good question," he added. “A cyber education is not for everyone, but it was perfect for me.”
