A recent op-ed in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette raised the issue of charter school funding. We always appreciate attention and discussion on charter schools. However, we think their position missed some key points. There are three areas we’d like to address from our experience serving students.
At PA Distance we take special education, and the specific needs that come along with it, very seriously. Our special education teachers go above and beyond for our students, and it shows. To showcase these efforts, we sat down with PA Distance Special Education Director, Mrs. Jamie Desrochers, and parent of a special education student, Mrs. Teresa Allshouse, to talk about the unique special education program at PA Distance.
Here at PA Distance, we understand that students learn in unique ways and, in some cases, require an individualized learning plan.
With National School Choice Week coming up January 26 - February 1, 2020, we wanted to share a story about one of our students:
Jamie is an integral part of their classroom community at PA Distance. That wasn’t always the case. Jamie is a gender fluid student who was neither understood nor supported at their previous school. Not only did Jamie face merciless bullying by peers, the school did not step in to help—they even contributed with thoughtless comments. Jamie’s parents sought to work with teachers and administrators only to be met with silence and frustration. These thoughtful parents realized their child could not thrive in their current school environment. That’s why they turned to PA Distance. PA Distance gave Jamie a fresh start. In the supportive context of PA Distance, Jamie is able to learn and grow without having to worry about taunts from peers and insensitivity from teachers. Now, Jamie is growing academically and socially with the help and support of her compassionate teachers and understanding peers.
Our teachers are devoted to their students—and it shows. These teachers make themselves available to students and invest in each one. Our classrooms foster a safe, nurturing environment where students can grow. Throughout the year, our teachers become trusted resources and guides for the students. Our students often cite how their teachers believe in them, make them feel safe, and help them reach new heights.
