Recap: November Field Trips

PA Distance Learning families traveled far and wide this week to attend History field trips across the state.  We learned a ton of stuff, but thought it would be neat to break down some of the coolest facts:

  • Pennsylvania is NOT named after William Penn.  William Penn didn’t want to name it after his family’s name for religious reasons. Nevertheless, the King of England at the time insisted that it be named after Penn’s father, Admiral Penn.

  • The Declaration of Independence was formally declared on July 2nd and approved by Congress on July 4th.  It wasn’t actually signed until August 2nd, 1776.

  • Abraham Lincoln is the only president who faces to the right on our United States coins.  This was just the way the designer preferred it – no other reason.

  • Heinz ketchup was originally a thin, brown sauce made from walnuts, anchovies, or mushrooms that had been fermented with vinegar and spices.  Not at all what it is now!

Here are some other fun things to think about:

  • Our PA Distance families don’t often know each other before field trips, and the parents usually become fast friends at our events.  This is noteworthy, because they’re often coming from very different backgrounds.

  • The tour guide at the Heinz History Center said that the PA Distance students were one of the best groups he’s ever had.

  • While field trips are a treat, our students spend time daily in their live classes with fellow students from across the state, with a diverse array of experiences and backgrounds.  Whether we realize it or not at the time, this helps teach our kids a unique kindness and understanding.

Please enjoy some photos from this week's trips!
